Role Play Cliche's
Oh yes, rather annoying to enter a role play room, and see
a thousand "Lady's" or "Lord's". Or check others profiles and see
that so many role players are fixated on playing beautiful,
busty characters, with not a flaw on their body.
Of course everyone has the right to play the type of character
that they want to, but come on people, the world; real or
fantasy, is not about all being beautifil and perfect in every way.
It's NOT about feeding and fulfilling your real life desires to
be beautiful, and using your role play character to do so.
It's NOT about being the most popular character, just because you
are not so popular in real life, and it's NOT about being all-
powerful, because you are power-hungry.
Role play has so many cliche's that it is almost as if everyone is
the same. Why? You CANNOT create a perfect, powerful
world through means of role play, because role play is at times
even more challenging than real life, and real life is far from
being perfect.
Here is a list of the most common cliche's in role play on MSN.
Do you fit any of these? Do you fit more than one...two....three?
One is ok, but if you fit more than one, you are no different
than most others out there. no matter how different you are
trying to be.
1...Beautiful, busty, perfectly shaped women - Sure, we all
want to be beautiful, in our own ways, but why must we all
choose characters that look like this?
The same goes for males, always trying to be the sexiest
male character with strong features that make him
drop-dead gorgeous, or dresses in all black and has that
mysterious look about him.
2...Lord & Lady - There are more "lord's" & "Lady's" in
MSN role play, than there were in the medevil days in real
life! I remember being in the DAL community (not trying to
down them, just need to use an example), and there were
ATLEAST 3 or 4 pages with characters who had "lady" on
the front of their name.
Whether it be Lord, Lady, King, Queen, Princess, Prince,
whatever...why must we all have a "title"? What is wrong
with playing Deacon Nevermore, rather than Lord Deacon
Nevermore? Some role players actually have background
history that gives them the right to play a character with a
title, and this isn't directed at them, but I have seen on more than
one occasion, people slap a title on their characters name,
without having a real role play reason for the title, and
many use titles because they THINK it "sounds and looks better",
or makes them feel more important. In my opinion, the name
Deacon Nevermore sounds better without a title, as do most
names I have encountered,
3...Names that symbolize "cool stuff" - Oh gawd, this one here
really gets under my skin. And although some ARE cool, most
are just a plea for attention. These words below are the most
commonly and OVERUSED names used...
A: Dark
B: Blood
C: Night
D: Storm
E: Rain
F: Crimson
G: Heart
H: Black
I: Soul
J: Frost
K: Angel
L: Shadow
M: Fire
The ones in red the MOST used. Whether it is "Darksoul",
"DarkNight", "Dark Kermit the Frog", why do you think you
have to come up with a name that symbolizes something that
is considered "cool" or "gothic"? My other question is, who
were your parents, and why would they name you that? In
all honesty, even in fantasy books, people don't have names
like that. What is wrong with a simple, yet cool made up
name such as "Diviya", oppsed to "Diviya Blackblood"?
4...Common abilities - I'm sorry, but way too many characters
have the ability to fly, teleport, and one of the worst,
HEALING. Tell me what's wrong with playing a character
that can't do anything except swing a sword with great skill.
Not a damn thing.
5...Where have all the humans gone? - Ehm.....last I checked,
humans made up the greatest population of fantasy stories.
Humans are the food for vampires, the slayers who try to
save the world from non-human beings, who even in the end,
have usually always prevailed over immortal beings, no
matter how strong and powerful the immortal being they
defeated was, yet humans are practically non-existent in
role play on MSN. I have even seen role play rooms state
in their descriptions, "No humans allowed". WTF is up
with that???
6...Soap Opera Storylines - This one you can find nearly
everywhere that you go. If someone isn't getting married,
they are "sitting in a chair rubbing her hand over her
pregnant stomach, with a warm smile on her face", or
there is an arguement or break-up between two lovers,
after one has cheated on the other. . Sure, there's nothing
wrong with having things like this in your role play,
but the last time I checked, the cast of "The Young & the
Restless" weren't vampires or demons, or medevil ladies and
lords, with swords strapped to their backs.
